Dario Calvaruso is the conceiver and founder of the Navakaraṇa Method. He has taught extensively in India, Nepal, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, South Korea, Mongolia, Indonesia, Middle-east, Europe, United Kingdom and the Americas. Head of the Navakaraṇa Community, he has trained thousands of Navakaraṇa practitioners and teachers internationally.
Heterogeneous, transformative and philosophical artist since a young age, Dario left Italy and his family when he was 21 on a journey of self-discovery and study of Sāmkhya-Yoga and Āyurveda to India, which lasted over 15 years. His first destination was Kāśi – The City Of Light (Benares, India). During this time, he began the study of Āyurveda with his teacher Paṇḍit Har Govind Miśra. On an auspicious day, while having a bath at the Ganges in Benares, Dario met Swami Jñānānanda Bharati, who took him in his āśrama at Gangotri, the source of the Holy River Ganges living with Swamijī in the Himalayas about 4,000 m altitude.
Dario learnt sāśtra-s in the orthodox tradition (guru-śiṣya paraṃparām) a rare and unique experience, especially for a Westerner. He lived with sufis in Pakistan and later with sadhus in monasteries (āśrama-s) of the śiva-siddhānta tradition in Tamil Nadu. During the years he spent in Tamil Nadu, Dario studied and practised Karaṇas (the Art of Movement) and Bharataṇāṭyam (Indian Classical Dance) with Nāṭyācārya Vṛnda Rāmanan (Trichy). At that time he also studied Yoga Darśana (Yoga philosophy) with Prof. Śrī Rangasvāmi Sourirājan at the Śrīrangam Veda Pāṭha-Śāla (one of the most traditional and highly recognised centre of Vedic Studies). He was initiated and guided in the study of Sanskrit language by Prof. Śrī Rangasvāmi Tirunārāyaṇan (a well-know Indian scholar). In 2007 Dario started his own āśrama at Srirangam (India), a city-temple and small island in the River Kaveri. Besides running the āśrama, Dario completed a period of academic studies on Yoga, Psychology, Counselling and Philosophy in India. Navakaraṇa Method came about spontaneously from his attempt to systematise different śāṣtra-s (traditional arts and sciences) into one holistic and comprehensive methodology for self-discovery, healing and transformation.
Dario has lived, studied and taught all over Asia. It was in Japan where he met the Grandmaster Fujiyoshi Etsuzan from whom he inherited and brought into Navakaraṇa the traditional Sui-Zen (sound-meditation). Since 2017 Dario has incorporated zen melodies (shirabe), creating sound-mediation practices. In 2022 Dario established Navakaraṇa Kyorei, a gurukulam and āśrama for self-transformation and organic living in Yakushima, one of the Ōsumi Islands at the south of Japan (a UNESCO World Heritage site and Biosphere Reserve). His project “Navakaraṇa Kyorei” has attracted international attention from movie directors and the medias.
Dario continue conducting Workshops, Retreats and Teacher Training Courses on Navakaraṇa internationally.
Navakaraṇa Lineage
Navakaraṇa Sākalya Tantra (shorten “Navakaraṇa Tantra”) is a methodology for “holistic self-transformation”. Navakaraṇa was conceived, founded and developped by Dario Calvaruso through a multidisciplinary integration of ancient practices into a modern scientific approach. Navakaraṇa is today taught by several teachers internationally.
Dario Calvaruso inherited the knowledge and practice of Sāṃkhya and Āyurveda in the traditional form from the late Paṇḍit Vaidya Har Govind Miśra (India). Yet, Dario applied these conventionally the fundamental cosmological and epistemology principles theorised by the Sāmkhya-s into Navakaraṇa only for the practical for self-directed transformation. These theories were inaccessible without basic understanding of Sanskrit language, thus Dario started learning Sanskrit form the late Paṇḍit Vaidya Har Govind Miśra and further developed the study with Prof. Rangasvāmi Tirunārāyaṇan. Sanskrit still remains an important element in understanding Navakaraṇa and its origins.
Indeed, Navakaraṇa applies Sāmkhya principles only in a conventional-sense. At the contrary of the Sāmkhya-s, Navakaraṇa does assert an ultimate truth not the navakaraṇi-s are striving for a common ultimate goal of life, like Sāṃkhya, Yoga and any belief-philosophical system of the East.
In the Navakaraṇa system these fundamental theoretical principles are not truth by themselves but only postulates for a practically development and implementation of self-directed procedures for a holistic transformation. For this reason the philosophy of Navakaraṇa is referred to as Nava-sāmkhya (i.e. New Sāṃkhya or Conventional Sāṃkhya).
The theories and procedures of Āyurveda have also be drastically redefined by Dario. At the contrary of Āyurveda where the role of an expert (vaidya), a group of therapists, expensive natural resources and a clinic are necessary to implement any procedure; in the Navakaraṇa system, the navakaraṇi himself has to know, implement and change his lifestyle by himself without relying on any external support. This system is referred to as Navakaraṇa Sākalya Tantra (the holistic approach to self-transformation).
Another important component which made Navakaraṇa as it is today is the artistic element. Dario leaned Hindustani music from the late Paṇḍit Prakāśa Mahārāja (India), Karaṇas (the Art of Movement) from Nāṭyācārya Vṛnda Rāmanan (India) and Fuke-shū (Traditional Zen Practice and Music) from Sensei Fujiyoshi Etsuzan (Japan) in the most orthodox way. Especially inspired from the zen approach to art (Fuke-shū), Dario re-elaborate music and movements away from their original context of performing art. He created a philosophical, introspective and esoterically art which is not meant for entertainment but for self-transformation. This approach to art is esoteric, as it can be understood only by a small number of people acquitted with specialised knowledge of both music and psychology.

Tradition and innovation
Tradition is consists of the uninterrupted transmission of ideas, knowledge, techniques and experiences from one generation to the next in a way that it can continually innovate while maintaining solid the fundamental principles from which has originated. Navakaraṇa is a true example of innovative and evolving tradition.
Universality and unity of traditions
Tradition does not belong to any country, ethnicity or religion but to the person from whom and to whom is handed to. Teacher is the giver of knowledge and the person who pass the tradition to the next generation. In Navakaraṇa we highly respect both teacher and tradition without linking them to any ethnical, religious and nationalistic factor.

Kula (कुल) in Sanskrit means “family, community or tribe”. Navakaraṇa Kula is comprehensive of everyone fully acquired with Navakaraṇa Method, and who truly apply it for self-transformation while also sharing it to create a healthy and conscious humanity. We are together freely in our diversity yet with the same method, vision and intention.
Darkness at night-time is expelled by a single moon and not by the group of a cluster of stars (एकश्चन्द्रस्तमो हन्ति न च तारागणोSपि च।ekaśchandrastamo hanti na cha tārāgaṇoapi cha). We truly value authentic relationships, where each of us contribute to the community at large by applying transformative changes into ourselves first, then enriched with knowledge and experience passing Navakaraṇa Transformative Method in person to others, for the sake of all.

In navakaraṇa, il termine ᴋᴀʀᴀṇᴀ richiama le 𝟏𝟎𝟖 𝐤𝐚𝐫𝐚ṇ𝐚 della danza di Śiva. La presenza del ritmo, della melodia e la particolare costruzione delle sequenze fanno sì che il praticante sembri quasi un danzatore: il movimento non è soltanto esercizio, ma diventa 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐨.

es realmente inspirador tener a llaaxxj moviéndose a mi lado, respirar con él… me motiva y me hace avanzar de maneras que nunca me espero.
solemos tratar de sostener la energía de la práctica entre los dos, que si uno se va mentalmente enseguida vuelva escuchando la respiración del otro, que si son 3 respiraciones y podemos 6, nos empujamos mutuamente, que las manías inconscientes sean una broma que nos hace llorar de risa después, que nos miremos por el rabillo del ojo a ver si estamos o seguimos bien

Resilience has many forms

As humans, we all move through highs and lows. Waves of extension and contraction.
Dancing starts when we stop seeing these experiences as opposites and begin to recognize them as " two but one "
As we breathe in and out in a full circle even others can become a mirror of ourselves dissolving the distance between “us” and “them” in and out
This past week, I had the joy of witnessing many people experience their very first headstand during class with one simple instruction: head down to the earth and one step in front of the other to end up in something we once believed impossible or scary 🤸♀️
Practising navakarana has given me a precise structure through which these movements can unfold organically, a kinesthetic progression that creates both trust and a sense of safety in the process.
It has deeply transformed my practice and therefore my life to have this kind of foundation with an artistic touch of sound healing and dance influences
Sometimes I think of it as ballet: a grounding base from which many forms of movement can grow.
This morning this piece was playing in the garden and I felt how really "A river flows in you 🎶"

Sui Zen 🤍 (pt. 2)
La práctica de este tipo de series requiere paciencia, mimo, presencia. Lo simple es más complejo de lo que parece y lo que parece difícil realmente no es lo más complejo precisamente.
Llegar a las posturas no es lo más significativo, sino ser capaz de sostener(las) y sostener(te) mientras estás en ellas. Que permanezcas ahí, que sigas estando y tu cabecita no se haya ido ya al otro lado.
Sentarse en el suelo creo que es de las cosas más difíciles de hacer en la sociedad occidental hoy en día: veo a tanta gente con problemas para siquiera agacharse a sus 30, 40 años… y no es raro: las sillas, las mesas, los ordenadores, los teléfonos y muy poca consciencia corporal hacen que al final el cuerpo se vaya atrofiando.
La práctica de Sui Zen precisamente permite volver a lo primario: aprender a sentarse en el suelo, que la columna tenga suficiente rango de movimiento, mantener la atención, sostener la concentración, escuchar y que el cuerpo sea escuchado.
No es una práctica simplemente restaurativa: es la práctica básica que deberíamos tener no solo cuando toca, sino al menos una vez en semana.
Te invito a que la practiques cuando tengas oportunidad, ya sea cuando “toque” por el calendario lunar o porque se ofrezca en otros momentos, hayas practicado Vinyāsa antes o hayas salido a correr.
Sui Zen es realmente especial, y poder tener acceso a algo así cerca de ti, lo es aún más (y hablo desde la experiencia de no tener nada o nadie cerca para poder ir a practicar durante años).
Así que ojalá nos veamos practicando esto dentro de poco 🙏🏼🤍

I arrived at an airport in Morocco for a training, completely lost and terrified, not really knowing what I was doing —in one of the hardest moments of my grieving process— pushing myself into a challenging experience that I wasn’t physically or emotionally ready for 🥲
I landed wanting to run away, until I received a message that said: “I joined your taxi and we’re waiting for you outside the airport. You’ll recognize us by the yoga mats.” Before I even noticed her mat, I saw curls that looked freshly done at a hair salon, and somehow it felt like a sign ✨
The first thing she told me was: “I came to assist the training.” And during that 3 hours ride, she somehow convinced me that I was exactly where I was supposed to be.
katheca0104 didn’t just become someone who helped me learn the Navakarana series; she became the embrace in which I finally allowed myself to fall apart.
We went on walks almost every night under the stars, philosophizing about life, and that’s when I realized I wanted her on my starting team.
When I invited her to yogaloftengadin and she said yes, it felt like heaven was winking at me.
After that week together, all that was left was to keep dreaming together.
Next week we’re launching our #OnlineYoga program and, even though I have no idea where this path will lead us, I feel it’s somewhere guided from above 🕊️

Ci sono luoghi che nascono prima nei sogni e poi prendono forma, respiro, energia.
Vikāsa è uno di questi.
All’inizio erano solo pareti vuote, silenziose, nude.
Poi tutto ha cominciato a prendere forma e vivere con voi.
Ci sono ore passate a insegnare, ad ascoltare, a trasmettere non solo movimento, ma conoscenza.
Ci sono passi incerti, tanta disciplina e un amore immenso per il percorso.
Rivedermi qui, agli inizi, mentre pratico da sola nello spazio ancora spoglio, mi ricorda una verità importante:
ogni realtà viva nasce da un atto di fede. 🤍
Navakaraṇa per me non è mai stato solo allenamento o “yoga”.
Navakaraṇa per me è presenza, trasformazione, ricerca continua.
È il corpo che dialoga con la mente, il respiro che crea spazio, la teoria che diventa esperienza.
E guardando questo reel che mariraostudio mi ha preparato con cura, sento profonda gratitudine. 🫀
Per chi c’era dall’inizio.
Per chi è arrivato dopo.
E per quella versione di me che, anche nel vuoto, riusciva già a vedere tutto quello che sarebbe diventato.

E la qualità di quella musica dipende da come trattiamo noi stessi, da quanto ascoltiamo ciò che abbiamo dentro e da come lo esprimiamo nel mondo.
Il bello è che noi non siamo strumenti passivi, ma partecipiamo alla melodia della nostra vita.
La nostra pratica ci aiuta ad accordare il nostro strumento:
il corpo diventa più sensibile, il respiro più ordinato, e anche ciò che senti interiormente trova una forma più armonica.
